"Coming of Age"

We have just read three stories in which the narrator of each story loses the innocence of childhood and begins life as an adult. In "Where Have You Gone, Charming Billy?," Paul watches a man die from fear. In "American History," Elena faces discrimination, and in "Marigolds," Lisbeth faces a world turned upside down because of poverty. Which of the three characters, in your opinion, which is more deeply changed? Give reasons for your opinion.

  2. Lisbeth changed so dramatically that she did not know when she had changed until she tor up the marigolds. the biggest example is she did not know weather to be angry at the kids for throwing the rocks or to join in on the what they thought was fun.

  3. Liz Beth was the one deeply changed. She was the one who realized it was time to grow up and leave behind childish things.

  5. I think it was an inspirational story about love and passion and i really enjoyed the plot setting. I would like to invest in a setting like this in the near future.

  7. I liked this story! She grew up and realized that she needed too! I think it was a great choice and the best part of the story, because at some point in everybody's life u realize its time to change and be a better person.

  8. I think Lizbeth change the most dramatically, because her family had very little money and faced many struggles and challenges.

  10. Paul is more changed because after billy boy died he wasn't the same. At first he was worried then he thought about all the ways to die in war and he started to laugh. I think he laughed because he was scared and not because it was funny he was just hiding his fear

  11. The story was good because that when the girl damaged the marigolds she planted them when she was older. when she was in her room asleep she heard her mom and dad talking her dad said that he didn't have a job and her mom said that we're not poor.

  12. I think Marigolds had the most change in childhood to womanhood. I think this because lisbeth was such a drama queen. She went through poor suffrage and bad weather.

  13. I think that Paul had the most change from their experience because he watched someone die from fear and it made him afraid of fear itself.

  14. I think that Lizabeth changed the most, because after she ruined Miss Lottie's flower garden, she had entered womanhood. She was 14, and still acting childish. The fact that her family was struggling with financial issues made her change even more dramatic. I feel sorry for Lizabeth because it doesn't seem like she has any guidance from other women, and it also seems like she's always stuck around the little neighborhood kids. I don't really blame her for acting like a child.

  15. I'd have to say Paul changed most drastically. War changes someone more than just loosing innocence. Elena and Lisbeth grew into adolescence, and Paul? He overcame his fear, and is facing things head on after Billy's death.

  16. I think Paul changed the most because of his experience. Once he saw him die, he had to grow up and really get ahold of the situation.

  17. I think Lisbeth changed the most emotional because she's not a child anymore, and she is a woman, and became mature.

  18. I think that Lizabeth changed the most, because at the beginning of the story she acted like a complete kid; she thought it was great fun to just run around and throw rocks to make Miss Lottie mad. After she destroys Miss Lottie's marigolds, she finally sees another person's situation as it is, and she feels really bad about it. She becomes compassionate.

  19. Lisbeth realized that she had to put her childish ways behind her and become an adult. I think she changed the most because she had to grow up and figure her life out. She broke down and ripped apart her neighbor's flower bed, she couldn't stand to see her dad cry, and she was a total mess.

  20. Lizabeth changed the most I think because after she ruined Miss Lottie's Marigolds she matured a lot and realized that she couldn't act childish anymore. I felt bad for Lizabeth because her mom was always working so she really didn't have a woman in her life as much as she could have had if her family wasn't struggling with money and her dad was struggling to find a job.

  21. I think the character that changed the most was lizabeth, Because at the beginning of the story she was a complete child, and lived off her parents fr everything and had nothing to worry about. By the of the story she ruined the marigold and needed to take responsibility for it. Her Parents were always working trying to keep food on the table and not go into debt, but it was hard to find and keep jobs. Then she saw her dad cry, And she realized nothing was perfect.

  22. I think that the character that has changed the most would be Lizbeth, because she had to go through feeling like a kid one minute and then a young adult at the same moment. She had to go through her family not having enough money and her father not having a job. She was ruined the marigolds because they were beauty in the town, and the town was ugly and filled with dirt. She had to realize that not everything in life is perfect and it never will be

  23. Character Lizabeth because she was changing from childhood to adulthood. As a 14 year old she was not acting her age. Yes, she might have been upset with what was going on with her dad not having a job. After see saw what she had done to Miss Lottie's Marigolds she was very upset with what she had done. I think thats when her change mostly was.

  24. Lizabeth because when she ruined Mrs. Lottie's flowers she was a big mess and she couldn't stand seeing her father cry. Even though Lizabeth was 14 years old, she still acted very childish. But I think after she saw her father cry it made her more of a woman.

  25. I think Elena was mostly effected because she thought the world was perfect and then she went to Eugene's house and she was judged and discriminated against.

  26. Lizabeth, because when she messed up the flower she changed a lot. She had to live with a family with not very much money and her father not having a job.

  27. I think that Paul was most deeply changed. War is harder on people emotionally than just having to grow up and going through hard time. Things like Elena and Lizabeth went through happen in everyday life but what Paul went through doesn't.

  28. I think that Paul was most changed in, "Where Have You Gone, Charming Billy?" War is very physically and and emotionally tough. Not everyone fights in wars, but everyone has that moment when you change from a child to an adult. Someday or another everyone faces hard decisions, or difficult times. It's a part of life, but war isn't.

  29. I think in the story Marigolds she changed the most out of all the stories. She felt really grown up after everything that happened and The girl from Two kinds wasn't very changed but, she made a good change too

  30. I think in Marigold's that Liz Beth changed the most, because she always would pick on the old lady and then she would feel sorry about it, and the one morning when she woke up to go tear up those Marigold out of the garden she just sat there and cried and cried and she said she was sorry to the lady.

  31. I think Lisbeth changed the most because of when she tore up the marigolds and then apologized to the lady.

  32. I think lizabeth because she tore up all of the marigolds and she felt guilty because she loved them. she felt horrible so she apologized to the lady
