Write your thoughts about the story. How did Elena feel at the end of the story? Can you relate to how she feels? They call this a "coming of age story." How did Elena grow up?
I thought the story was pretty great. I think discrimination of color or race is pretty wrong! I wish the story could have had a good ending and she could have gotten to go into the amazing house she always creeps on. Although I feel she should of stayed home with her mother and comforted her!
Discrimination is a wrong thing and it was a good thing that was pointed out to people in this story. Also i think it should have had a better ending, Eugene's mom shouldn't have been so mean to Elana and she should have let her into her house.
I didn't like this story, quite frankly. The highlight of it was when a Jewish couple moved out of their house, so she could watch another family, and develop a fascination on their life because she's so unhappy with hers? I understand the escape part of watching their lives, because she doesn't want to be where she is, but don't you think she could do something different maybe? I don't like living in Sigourney, but I don't watch people from their windows. I didn't like the ending. She didn't do the considerate think, and comfort her mom, but instead went and was even more hurt than she already was? Elena grew up by realizing race matters.
I didn't like this story. I thought that Elena's mom should have stopped her from going over to Eugene's house. I also thought that it was weird how she would sit on the fire escape and read and watch the Jewish couple. I liked how Eugene and Elena become friends. I thought that Eugene's mom could have been nicer. I also thought that Elena should have stayed with her mom and comforted her because she was really upset.
I didn't really like this story. I wouldn't have liked to go to school at her school, but I liked that her and Eugene became friends. I thought it was a little weird that she watched people through their window. I think her mom did the right thing by letting her learn a lesson but I still felt bad for her. I thought Eugene's mom was mean and I didn't like the ending!
Race is not a good thing to do and it is a good thing for racism to come up in the story because it teaches people how racism used to be and teaches people not to be racist about other people. I felt bad about Elena and I cant really relate to her problem.

I did like it that Elena found a friend, but it was sad that her friend's mom didn't like her just because she was a different race. I felt bad for Elena when she got turned down by Eugene's mom, but I also thought Elena's mom did a good thing by letting her go and learn a life lesson for herself.
I thought the story was really good. The fire escape part of the story was pretty interesting. There was some racial discrimination that I didn't care for. I also can connect to the story, because theres times I haven't got to do things. Theres times theres been something bad happen and I didn't know much about it.
I didn't like the story that much. But it makes people realize how bad racism was back then. Everyone was mad at the immigrants for JKF's assassination when they didn't do anything. I didn't like the ending and Eugene's mom should have been nice.
I felt sorry for her. No, I can't relate to her. She got more aware to racism. My thoughts on this story are that she shouldn't have been treated so badly by Eugene's mom. I didn't really like tis story because of the mother being mean to her.
I really liked this story, because it shows readers how someone of a different race would've felt then, or even in today's society, after being turned away or turned down. I wasn't expecting Eugene's mom to push Elena away like she did at the end, because she didn't do anything wrong. I felt bad for her, but I also thought that her mom did the right thing by letting her go instead of going to church because she learned a lesson. She learned that not everyone is accepting of different races. I wish that Eugene's mom would've let Elena in, so the story could have had a happy ending! I still liked this story though.
I didn't really like the story because of the racism. What you think about people of a different nationality is your choice but don't put other people down with hurtful things about skin color and so on. I would have liked it better if Eugene's mother would have let Elena into their house. I thought it was rude of her. Elena should have just listened to her mom and stayed home. She could have avoided humiliation from his mother. Plus, Elena should have stayed home anyways because a president can only die once but you can go study with your friends whenever.
I thought the story was okay. I didn't find her sitting on the fire escape looking at people through their windows very interesting. The story really explained how discrimination affected people. Even today some people are kicked out of certain areas because of the way they look. In the end, Elena ended up learning that she wasn't going to be able to do everything she wanted to because of the way she looked.

I didn't really like this story because, it show's how bad racism was back when JFK was president, black kid's were made to go to a colored school and were treated bad. If the blacks went to the same school as the white's they would have to go to different class room's, drink out of a different water fountain, use a different rest room and more. I think it should have had a happy ending like Eugine's mom let her go in the house.

Its an ok story but I really wasn't interested in this story it was to be the truth kinda of a boring story. The ending was bad when she was turned away by the mother and this was a pretty sad story all around.
Elena was very broken up that she could not go in and see Eugene. I can see why she feels that way so yes. Becoming mature is coming of age to know what they are talking about to understand and try to fix it or people effected by it. she grew up thinking every place was like el building and everybody was out to get her something like that.
